What You Need to Know Before A Day of Fishing

Fishing can be a relaxing way to enjoy a day in the Heber City area. Whether you’re planning to fish with a few buddies, or you’re bringing the family along, there are some important things you should know before setting off in your boat. Follow these safety tips recommended by Jordanelle Rentals & Marina and you’re sure to have a great day of fishing.

What You Need to Know Before A Day of Fishing

Wear Life Jackets

According to Utah law, all boats are required to have one U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person. The life jackets must be in good, working condition, and must be worn by all ages. When you rent from Jordanelle Rentals & Marina, each of our boat rentals includes these approved life jackets for drivers and passengers.

No Drinking & Boating

While alcohol is allowed on boats, it is against Utah law to drive a boat while under the influence. The same penalties for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol also apply to those who are driving a boat with a BAC (blood-alcohol content) that is over the legal driving limit.

Watch Speed Limits

Utah’s waterways do have specific speed limits. When out on the open water, watch for and follow speed limit signs. If you’re in a slow or wakeless speed area, you are required to operate your fishing boat at a slow, idle speed. This applies if you’re within 150 feet of another boat, a person swimming, skiing, or fishing in the water, a ramp or dock, or a designated swimming area.

Watch the Weather

Before heading out on the water, be sure to check the weather forecast. Utah temperatures and skies can change quickly. Avoid an unexpected rainstorm or a chilly, cold day. Also, if lightning or high winds are expected, postpone your trip for another day, as these conditions can be very dangerous for boaters.

Take Precautions

Make sure that passengers avoid spending time near the engine while it’s running. Carbon monoxide emissions can still be dangerous, even in open water. If anyone on your boat experiences symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, or blurred vision, get them to the nearest hospital right away to be evaluated.
