How to Master Standing Up on Your Paddleboard

You’ve seen people gliding across the water, looking effortlessly cool on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) — but let’s be honest, you’re wondering if you’ll spend more time paddling or plunging. Good news: with the right tips and a little practice, you can keep the splashes to a minimum. At Jordanelle Rentals & Marina, we love helping first-time paddle boarders gain confidence, have fun, and stay (mostly) dry. Here’s how to master standing up on your paddleboard.

Start Low and Steady

Before standing, get comfortable on your knees. This helps you get used to the motion of the water and the feel of your board. Keep your paddle across the front for balance while you get settled.

Move One Foot at a Time

When you’re ready to stand, place one foot flat on the board where your knee was. Then, plant the other foot beside it. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and centered on the handle area–that’s the board’s balance point.

Rise Slowly, Don’t Rush

The key to standing up is slow, controlled movement. Press into your feet, keep your knees bent, and straighten up gradually. Looking ahead (not down at your feet) helps your body stay aligned and stable. Keep your eyes forward as you start to move the board with the paddle.

Maintain Your Balance

Once you’re standing, think “soft knees.” Slightly bending them allows you to absorb the natural movement of the water. Use your paddle like a third point of balance, placing it in the water as soon as you’re upright.

Practice Makes Perfect

Don’t get discouraged if you fall a few times; it’s all part of the process. Each attempt builds muscle memory, and soon, standing will feel natural. The more you practice, the less you’ll wobble.
