5 Jet Ski Beginner Basics

Ready to feel that thrill as you crash through waves at Jordanelle Reservoir? Let’s make sure your first ride on a jet ski is as safe as it is fun. At Jordanelle Rentals & Marina, we’re all about giving jet ski beginners the confidence to hop on, throttle up, and come back grinning. Here are five important beginner basics you need to know.

1. Slip on the Right Life Jacket

Before you even touch the start button, zip up a properly-fitted, U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket. It should be snug (not squeezing), all buckles fastened, and the right size for your weight. Finally, do a quick “arm lift” test. If the jacket rides up to your ears, tighten it or try a smaller size.

2. Clip the Kill Switch

That little lanyard isn’t a suggestion; it’s your best friend. Attach the kill-switch cord to your wrist or PFD. If you fall off, the engine shuts down immediately, preventing the jet ski from continuing without you. Two seconds to clip in can save you a whole lot of hassle on the water.

3. Learn the Lay of the Lake

Give yourself a minute to study the map and understand no-wake zones, marinas, and high-traffic areas. Keep a generous distance from shorelines, swimmers, and other boats. When in doubt, slow down, point the bow where you can clearly see, and communicate with hand signals when riding with friends.

4. Throttle Smart

Jet skis steer best under power. If you need to turn, keep a little throttle engaged to maintain control. Remember to maintain wide spacing between you and other watercraft. Crowding is the fastest way to earn a spray of bad luck. Lastly, scan ahead constantly, watch for turns from others, and be extra cautious near bends or when the sun is low and glare picks up.

5. Do Your Pre-Ride Checks

Finally, give your craft a quick once-over. Check the fuel, battery, and any rental instructions our dock team provides. Then, when you climb on, adjust your stance so your knees are soft, your core is engaged, and your elbows are relaxed. Once you’re out on the water, practice gentle figure-8s in open water to get a feel for acceleration and braking.

Safe Fun Starts Here

Life jackets, kill switches, and common sense are the perfect trio for a great first day on the water. Follow these basics and you’ll turn “beginner” into “confident rider” in no time.
