4 Reasons Your Jet Ski Is Misfiring

If you’re out on the beautiful waters of Jordanelle Reservoir and your jet ski starts misfiring, it can quickly put a damper on your day. But fear not! There are several common reasons why a jet ski might misfire, and with a bit of troubleshooting, you can get back to enjoying the waves in no time. So, let’s look at four reasons your Jordanelle Rentals & Marina jet ski is misfiring.

1. Bad Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are one of the first things to check if your jet ski is misfiring. Over time, spark plugs can become fouled or worn out, leading to poor ignition and misfires. Look at the spark plugs and see if they appear dirty or damaged. While we do regular maintenance on our jet skis, spark plugs are a common misfiring culprit.

2. Fuel Filter Clog

Another common cause of jet ski misfiring is a clogged fuel filter. A dirty or clogged fuel filter can restrict fuel flow to the engine, leading to erratic performance and misfires. We check fuel filters between every reservation, but if you ever have issues, call the marina.

3. Water in the Fuel

Water in the fuel can also cause your jet ski to misfire. If moisture seeps into the fuel tank, it can mix with the gasoline and cause improper combustion. This issue can result from condensation in the tank or from accidentally filling up with contaminated fuel. Always check the fuel for any signs of water presence, and if detected, it’s essential to drain the tank and refill it with clean gasoline.

4. Weeds

Weeds can create significant issues for jet skis, particularly when they get sucked into the intake grate. When weeds or other debris clog the intake, it restricts water flow to the jet pump, which can cause the engine to misfire or stall. This decreased performance may mimic other mechanical issues, leading to confusion during troubleshooting. To prevent this, always inspect the intake area before heading out and clear away any debris that might hinder your jet ski’s operation.
